My dog licked her spay wound. It's swollen and open. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 41 lbs

My 1 year old dog recently got spayed (we’re on day 11) and she was able to lick her wound recently and it appears to be a bit swollen and have a small opening. I’be scheduled a very appointment (and put her cone back on) but out sure if I should do more.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should clean the wound with cotton buds and warm, boiled water 2-3 times a day until you see your vet. Putting a cone back on is an excellent idea too. Your vet will likely prescribe Apollyon an antibiotic cream and maybe will put a stitch or two to close the small opening in the wound.
