My puppy's tail tip has dried skin. Is it serious or just a scab?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 9 days old | 49 lbs

Hey guys, I just recently noticed on the tip of my puppies tail, there’s this spot that looks like dried skin, I was worried so I looked it up and there were some saying it could be tail necrosis but as far as I know he hasn’t damaged his tail or had it fractured or anything like that, he’s a pit terrier but also when he’s excited his tail goes all over the place and really really fast so I don’t know if he maybe hit the end on something and hurt it.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tato. Necrosis of the tail is a very serious condition that typically occurs after tail surgery or serious injury. He may have a scab on the end of his tail from repeating damaging from wagging it when he gets excited. Pit bulls can also be prone to an overgrowth of mites known as Demodex. This is usually bald or scabby lesions. Ringworm can also make a crusty lesion. While it is likely not a serious problem for him, it is best for him to see his veterinarian to know for sure. He should certainly be seen though if the lesion grows, bleeds or starts to bother him. I hope this information helps!
