Why does my spayed female dog's vulva appear recessed or abnormal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed

Hi, my dog’s backside does not look right to me. I attached a picture here. I want to understand if she appears abnormal, so that I can then continue with the right process. I am concerned about sexual abuse. Before bringing her to a vet for a wellness exam I just want professional advice. She is a 4 year old, spayed pit-mix. I am sure this is not an allergic reaction to anything. So my question is, are my thoughts well founded? Does she appear abnormal? Thank you very much.

Hello there, I am so sorry to hear that you are suspicious this could be happening with Summer. I do not see anything obviously wrong in this photograph. Her vulva may be a bit recessed, which is common in this breed and can be helped with a vulvoplasty surgery and weight loss if it causes secondary problems like urinary tract infections. Sometimes this is an incidental finding that doesn't cause other problems though. Best of luck at her appointment with her veterinarian. Hope this helps.
