Pet's info: Dog | Shorkie | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old
My dog got very hot today on a bus - I put cool water on her tummy and fanned her while we were on there but she started to get agitated and wanted to climb on me. She was panting very heavily. I got us off the bus and straight over to a shady wooded area and slowly walked her home. I also carried her for the most part while the breeze blew around her exposed tummy. She has eaten and drunk water and also played with her toys since. But everything I’ve read says I need to get her to a vet.

Hello there, I'm sorry to hear that this happened today with Bella. You did the exact right things to do with an overheated pet. In the future, I'd avoid taking her in enclosed environments in the warm weather, or bring ice water to help with cooling if its absolutely necessary. Pets in heat stroke may experience weakness, vomiting, collapse, and unconsciousness. It doesn't sound like Bella experienced a true heat stroke and is in need of medical care since she is acting totally normal tonight. If she does experience any change in behavior, lethargy, or disinterest in food, I'd recommend having her seen by her veterinarian. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
