My cat has raw skin around her mouth. Will it heal or need treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 9 lbs

I noticed my cat had developed sores/raw skin around her mouth this morning. I’ve noticed this happening occasionally over the last few years, but they’ve never been this bad before. Will she need treatment or medication? Or will it heal on its own?

That looks like it could be a contact allergy, possibly to plastic. If you use plastic bowls to feed or water her, I strongly recommend changing them out for glass, ceramic or stainless steel. See how she does over a couple of weeks. If there is no improvement, gets worse or recurs, then have her seen by your vet so the underlying cause can be determined and treated.
