My cat is stressed after moving and won't poop. Is she constipated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I’ve just moved to a new state with my cat, the house has 2 new roommates. The whole event has been very stressful for her. For now, I have her confined to my bedroom with her food, water, and litterbox- aswell as toys and her cat tree (though shes shown no interest in toys right now). What im most worried about though is I havnt seen her poop. She peed once in the box, but nothing else. Shes been eating and drinking regularly, and I checked around but she hasnt done it anywhere else either.

Hi there, Sorry to hear that moving has been so stressful for Mongoose. I'm glad you have her confined to one room for now to adjust, that is perfect. It would be helpful to know how long she's gone without pooping. She may hold it for a day or two longer than normal while she's stressed. If it goes on longer than that, she needs to see a veterinarian. If she is very mildly constipated or dehydrated, adding some water to her canned food to make it soupy may help. A pheromone product to help with stress called Feliway may also help her adjustment. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I hope Mongoose begins to feel at home again soon.
