Is it better to visit my dogs or not see them during a long absence?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 5 months old | 18 lbs

We have 2 dogs. Bella is 7 and we’ve had her one year. Rocky is 3 and we’ve had him 7 months. Each one is a Chihuahua mix. I’m going to be moving out of the home for 4-6 months, and my wife will be caring for the dogs on her own. If I see them sporadically, will that confuse them or cause them trauma? Would it be better for them to not see me at all until I’m back home, or should I visit with them on occasion? I want to make this as easy for them as possible.

Hi there, This is a very thoughtful question. I do not think this will cause Bella or Rocky any trauma. Dogs live in the moment and I think they will be happy to see you at any time or frequency. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
