Why is my dog throwing up after jumping, drinking, and eating human food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 72 lbs

My dog has been throwing up every time she jumps off the bed and most of the time it does not look like it was fully digested. I also noticed she gets choked very easily when drinking water too fast. I also have a young daughter who likes to feed her people food and my dog will throw up after that too.

Those are all very common causes of vomiting in dogs. If Delta is having issues getting on and off the bed to the point of vomiting, adding a dog ramp so it's less jarring for her is a good idea. I would also limit how much water she drinks at once (some dogs love to gulp) by either refilling the bowl more often with slightly less water, or using a bowl that slows down eating/drinking some to avoid gulping if you can't be there to monitor her -- but do make sure she always has access to water. As for the people food, you will unfortunately need to monitor your daughter as people food can cause digestive upset and vomiting. Teaching some commands like "leave it" and "drop it" can also help keep Delta from vacuuming up food. If the vomiting continues, a vet visit is also a good idea to rule out issues such as GI upset, food allergies, functional problems, etc that could be causing the vomiting.
