My cat got scratches from a fight. What infection signs to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 days old | 12 lbs

My neighbors indoor cat got outside and tried attacking my cat. My cat got two scratches on his nose but I don’t see any bites and he’s acting normal, drinking water eating food and playing. I haven’t seen any swelling or warmth anywhere so I wanted to know if there’s anything else I should look out for? Will be be okay? Thanks I’m advance!

Hello. I am so sorry for Minkah's run-in with the other cat. You are right on target watching for any redness, swelling or discharge from the scratches that might indicate some infection. You might just lightly dab the scratches with a little peroxide just to keep things clean. It is very unlikely that you have to worry about anything significant, especially rabies, since this was just a scratch & the other cat is primarily an indoor cat. So, if the scratches begin to look worrisome, or Minkah acts painful or uncomfortable ( which is pretty unlikely ), do contact your veterinarian for further treatment. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
