Why is my cat sneezing, licking her nose, with a swollen, runny nose?

My female adult cat who is not spayed keeps sneezing and licking her nose. Her nose is swollen and running. This is the first time that this is happening.

Poor Leah. She could have a severe upper respiratory infection or could have something stuck in her nasal cavity causing the swelling and discharge. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. When cats have issues with their nose like you are describing, they often stop eating because they can't smell their food. You want to avoid that happening, so I would take her into a vet this weekend to get this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

It sounds like Cat could have an upper respiratory infection. These infections are usually viral and kittens are often infected when they are very young before they are vaccinated. The respiratory virus can become latent and then flare up during times of stress causing conjunctivitis and nasal discharge/sneezing. I’d recommend having your veterinarian examine Cat to confirm. Occasionally secondary bacterial infections will develop and antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. A scratch on the eye is also possible but wouldn’t explain the runny nose.

Without seeing the x-ray and examining your cat, it is difficult to know the exact cause. She could have an infection or possibly a polyp. I am assuming your vet prescribed an antibiotic and, hopefully, she will start to improve within a few days. If not, call your vet and give him/her an update as your vet may need to adjust her treatment.

It looks like Kitty might have an upper respiratory infection causing conjunctivitis. A viral infection is most common, although secondary bacterial infections can also occur. A scratch on the surface of the eye could also cause redness and discharge but would not cause sneezing. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam. They can check for a scratch on the cornea or prescribe medications to treat a respiratory infection.

Hello. You are describing Heidi with an upper respiratory infection. Most of these are viruses & generally run their course in 10-14 days. As long as Heidi is eating & drinking, she may not need to be on any medications. If you have never had her tested for feline leukemia & feline immunodeficiency virus ( & never vaccinated ), this might be something to request that your vet do this. This might change how she is or is not treated now & in the future. Just like with us, keeping her hydrated & eating are the best ways to deal with these infections. Offer her canned foods, broths or stocks & even tuna water. The more hydrated she is, the better she will feel. Any concerns, please see your veterinarian for further treatments. My other cats eye seems all swollen and puffy, it's watering alot and she's sneezing and her meow sounds shakey. Could this be allergies, or a cold? Should I call the vet?
In that picture, I can't tell if there is anything wrong with the eye. Puffy, red, watery eyes with nasal discharge in a cat is usually an indication of an upper respiratory infection. This could only be verified with a physical exam from a vet who would be able to rule out something else, like a primary ocular issue +/- allergies. If an upper respiratory infection is the culprit, antibiotics, eye medication, and immunoboosters usually do the trick with 7-10 days of treatment. Best of luck to you and Letty!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Princess. She likely has an upper respiratory tract infection based on the signs you have described. It seems to involve her eyes and possibly her ears. She will need to see her veterinarian today if possible. If this is the case, she will most likely be started on an oral antibiotic, eye ointment and an ear medication as well. In the meantime, encourage her to eat and drink. Being congested makes it harder to smell her food. This can affect her appetite. So if she stops eating well, you can add warm water to her food or offer warmed canned food. These will smell stronger and may entice her to eat. I hope this information helps!

You are correct that Leia could have allergies, but it could also be a respiratory infection. I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet may prescribe her some medications that may help with her symptoms, and I can give you some things you can do at home for her. First, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

Sneezing is most commonly a sign of an upper respiratory infection, although it can be related to allergies, foreign objects or even polyps or tumors in the nose. If the nasal passages are obstructed with mucous or inflamed then she may be breathing through her mouth because she can't breathe through her nose, however if you think she might be having difficulty breathing you should see a immediately. Otherwise I'd recommend making an appointment to see your vet when you're able for an exam and to determine what might be going on.

What a cutie! It sounds like she might be suffering from a chronic viral infection, which some cats are prone to. It can be an active infection, or there can be structural changes in the nose from previous infection that cause frequent colds and runny noses. L-lysine treats help some cats with this issue. Otherwise, a vet appointment whenever it's going on for more than 3-4 days or if she has a decreased appetite or is squinting her eyes.
