My dog is on UTI meds, but now has blood in her urine. Is this normal?

My dog has been showing signs of a UTI. She had cloudy and pink urine as well as leakage. We took her to the hospital, they subscribed her Cephalexin. She has been taking it for 3 days now, and she is now having drips of blood at the end of her urine. Is this normal?

Hi there, This is a difficult question- the real answer here is : maybe. It would be helpful to know if Lainey had any imaging (x-ray, ultrasound) done when her urinary tract infection was diagnosed. If she has a stone in her bladder, she will continue to have blood in her urine, frequently urinate, and re-infect herself with urinary tract infections despite antibiotics. Treatment for bladder stones is usually surgical removal, but sometimes smaller stones can be dissolved with a strict prescription diet. If she had a really bad urinary tract infection with no stones, it is possible she may have some bacterial sludge and blood clots to pass during her antibiotic course. I'd recommend following up with your regular veterinarian and letting them know this is happening with Lainey. Since they originally saw her and her urinalysis, they will be able to advise you best. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
