My dog's carpal pad injury looks strange. Is a vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 48 lbs

My dog somehow ended up with a damaged tissue under her carpal pad while playing with dogs. I wiped the area with damp paper towels, applied pressure with clean towel to stop bleeding and then applied kwik stop styptic powder with a damp cotton pad and bandaged the leg. I kept the bandage on for couple of hours and then took it off. The photo is 1 week after the injury. There is no bleeding, she walks good on her leg with no signs of pain so Im not sure if Im supposed to take her to the vet?

Hello. You did an admirable job caring for Lenny's injury. It is difficult to tell if this is granulation tissue, or just how the damaged skin balled up, but if the injury is sound & stable, no pain & no bleeding, then there is probably no need to do very much at this point. The skin has a remarkable ability to remodel, so this might totally go down with time. Just watch things as she could reinjure this & get things bleeding again. Any concerns, do see your veterinarian, but I might just see how this does over the next couple of weeks on its own. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
