My puppy has a belly button bump. Is it an umbilical hernia or normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 3 days old | 1.9 lbs

Is it normal for a puppy to have a small bellybutton look. Where the umbilical cord was she's now just 9 weeks old. The vet office told me it's a umbilical hernia. She has no pain at all, in that area. Some of her siblings have the same tummy bellybutton look. Where I got my puppy from she had the puppies checked out, with no concerns at all of an umbilical cord hernia?? Should I get a second opinion from a different vet office. This vet office has already mentioned. Surgery to be done....

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It does look like umbilical hernia. As long as it is not getting bigger, there is no danger for Gracie. Umbilical hernia rarely causes any problems to dogs, unless it is very large (it does not look large in Gracie). This hernia can be surgically repaired, it is usually done at the same time as neutering (during one surgery).
