My dog has an enlarged prostate. Should I neuter him despite risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 15 lbs

My dog, 9-11 y.o. pug/chihuahua, in good health, had prostate infection months ago, cleared with antibiotics, recently dripping blood from penis, antibiotics cleared it, x-rays show enlarged prostate. I hear UN-NEUTERED dogs have prostate issues, risk high for cancer as they age, THEN I read its dangers to neutering a dog. I dont want him to have more problems. Im scared to neuter him bcz I worry he'll have big problems after. I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO & IM VERY SCARED. PLEASE ADVISE, HELP??

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Biggi. Please do not be afraid of the surgery to neuter him. It may not take care of all his problems with the prostrate gland, but may help. As long as Biggi is in good health as evidenced by normal blood work, has no obvious cardiac or pulmonary problems, then neutering him should not put him in any danger. All surgery carries a small risk, but if you trust your veterinarian, Biggi should sail through the surgery. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
