My senior dog only eats one meal a day. Is this healthy or a concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

For the past 6months, my dog has moved to only eating at dinner. She has never been particularly excited about food and when we were staying with some other dogs that ARE food-obsessed, we decided to stop feeding her breakfast because it was too tricky to manage the other dogs & she never touched it! It kind of stuck! She drinks plenty of water & now tends to come ask for dinner at 5pm. She still has regular BMs & plenty of energy. You'd never know she was so old! Is this a problem or concern?

I'm glad to hear that Molly is such a spunky older girl! Not to worry - feeding her once per day is perfectly reasonable. I generally recommend twice daily feedings for adult dogs simply because most dogs prefer eating more often, but it sounds as though Molly has made her preferences perfectly clear! Some dogs are just less food motivated than others. As long as she eats a good dinner, there's no cause for concern.
