If my dog has Lyme disease, can it spread to my family or other pets?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 4 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

During routine Lyme, Heartworm test at vet today, pepper was Lyme positive. We did other testing as well and she will be on antibiotic for 28 days. Is there any risk of transmission of Lyme to human or our elderly dog from pepper? We have a toddler as well. Can it be passed through saliva or any other form?

No. Lyme disease can only be transmitted via the bite of an infected tick. Be sure to perform tick checks whenever Pepper returns from outside and use a monthly tick preventive. https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-check-your-pet-for-fleas-and-ticks/ https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/lyme-disease/
