Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 79 lbs
Hi. I walked our 12 yr old lab at 11:30 pm and the next day, I was only able to let him go out at 10:30 am. How long can a dog hold his pee and does constant holding pee for a long period of time causes serious health problem? Thank you.

It's best to try and get your pup out as much as possible, both for the chance to go potty, and to get some exercise. Most dogs can hold their urine up to 12 hours, but taking them out once before bed, and then again first thing in the morning as well as 2-3x more times during the day can help ensure they have a chance to go without holding it too long. As long as Buddy is otherwise healthy and happy, and the routine works for the both of you, it should be fine to hold his urine overnight. Signs to watch out for that may mean he needs to go more often or has a medical issue include having accidents in the house, needing to go out very often (hourly in an adult dog), having cloudy or bloody urine, excessive licking of the hind end, or pain. If you suspect there is something wrong, a vet visit is always best.
