My dog won't eat, fixating on female in heat. Is his health at risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Samoyed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 62.611 lbs

My brothers dog is on her first heat and my dog is fixating on her. He hasn’t eaten in two days already and keeps whining and looking for her. Should I be worried for his health? My brother wants them to mate eventually, so fixing isn’t a solution at the moment. Further, a shooter once masturbated him when another dog of ours was in heat. Is this an option to calm him down?

It is not recommended to masturbate the dog. If you don't want the dogs to mate right now you will need to put them at different households where he cannot see or smell her. The only other option is to spay/neuter them (which is actually the better option). He is not likely to go back to normal until she is off her heat cycle. To directly answer your question, yes you should worry for his health. He cannot go without eating for too many days.
