My rescue puppy's paw is swollen. Does she need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

We have a 4-5 month old rescue. Yesterday we noticed that right behind the pad of her foot was very swollen, we thought maybe she was stung or something, today it looks like this. We aren’t sure if it was just caused from her biting at it or if it could be something else. Should we take her to emergency vet or just put her in a cone and monitor it?

As long as she is behaving normally and not acting sick, I would get her in to your regular vet as soon as possible but I don't think a trip to the emergency vet is necessary. It could be a sting or possibly an abscess from a small puncture wound that sealed over. If she does act sick, lethargic, refuses food, has a fever, then certainly take her to the emergency vet to get it evaluated and treated.
