My dog is chewing her tail. Can I use a cone if I can't afford a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

My Dog started chewing her tail last week so I wrapped it up and changed the wraps daily. It started to heal but when I changed it yesterday she chew it off she doesn’t seem to be in any pain from it and she is not bleeding. What else can I do to help her? Should I get her an cone? I can’t afford a vet right now.

Yes, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent chewing or licking. The cone should extend at least 2" from the tip of her nose to be effective. You can remove it at mealtimes, just watch her closely and replace as soon as she is done eating. Keep the area clean and dry as well. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution for daily cleaning. Keep it well padded to prevent trauma if she bangs it against objects when wagging.
