My cat has a broken hip and is in pain. Can he get a cast or sedation?

My cat Punti was hit by a car and has a broken hip. The doctor thought he can heal with cage rest. He was given an anti-inflammatory (starts with dexi I think) and sent home, no cast or anything to immobilize. He's in pain, I can't keep him from moving. If I take him to a hospital in the morning, could he get a cast or be sedated until the pain subsides? Need to know as the nearest hospital is a 4 hour roundtrip & my elderly mom is ill so I'll have to find someone to stay w/ her while I take him. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 9 lbs

Hip fractures cannot be immobilize with a cast - it is not an option for this kind of fractures. However, if Punti is still in pain despite anti-inflammatory medication, your local vet should be able to prescribe stronger pain killers for him that can be given alongside anti-inflammatory drugs. If that treatment does not help, hip surgery may be required to fix the break or to remove the head of the femur (depending on the type of fracture). Good luck.
