My dog has puffy, swollen eyes. Is it allergies? What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 61 lbs

My dogs had a puffy eyes after scratching it. I put the cone on so he wouldn’t itch at it and the swelling went down. I took the cone off because it looked like it was fully healed. Once I came back to the house, his eyes were back to being puffy. I live in Austin so I’m assuming it’s allergies

Yes, it could be allergy related. The best thing to do is rinse out his eyes a couple times per day with an eye wash like this: https://worldtails.securevetsource.com/itemView/view/198943_Home.pml?productId=118452 You could also use an oral antihistamine like Claratin (loratadine) 10mg once per day.

    Coal could have an allergic reaction to a bug bite or bee sting if his face appears swollen. This often starts as a puffy area then can spread to the rest of the face. It is an emergency if he can't seem to breath properly or if his neck is beginning to swell. Most of the time the swelling resolves on its own after a few hours. If not, your veterinarian can give him antihistamine and steroid injections that bring the swelling down right away.

This sounds unusual, it is definitely not normal. Without seeing what the eye looks like when it is puffy and inflamed it is hard to tell what's going on. In the picture you provided the eyes look normal. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet to have his eyes checked out to make sure there is nothing too serious going on. He may simply have some allergies and need to be on an antihistamine in the evenings to prevent his eyes from becoming irritated and swollen.

Oliver is on Apoquel for allergies but sometimes his eyes still get watery and itchy. They are slightly red and swollen right now and he is rubbing at them. Is there anything I can do or buy at a petsmart to relieve his irritated eyes?
Do not give any or apply anything into Oliver's eyes without the advice of your veterinarian. Contact your vet about giving an antihistamine in addition to Apoquel to Oliver for relief. There are OTC antihistamines that can be used in dogs as well as several prescription options. Discuss dosing with your vet as, legally, we are unable to recommend medications and dosing in the absence of a patient-vet-client relationship and a physical exam.

It's possible that Daisy is having an allergic reaction if the area around her eye is swollen. Allergic reactions are usually treated with injectable or oral antihistamines and corticosteroids. If the actual eye itself appears swollen or red she could have conjunctivitis, a corneal abrasion, or even something like glaucoma. I'd recommend having your vet examine her eye in person. If both eyes or her muzzle become swollen you should see an emergency treatment for an allergic reaction.

My dogs eyes are red and a tiny bit swollen. This happened about two weeks ago but when away. What could it be? He is acting like normal.
This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. It looks like Daisy could be having an allergic reaction. I suggest you give her one 25mg Benadryl tablet. She can have that same dose every 8 hours. If by tomorrow morning she still has the swelling she needs to get to a vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

I’ve taken my GSD to the vet for his allergies before and they have suggested high dosage of allergy medicine but I cannot schedule an other appointment until the end of the month. Is there any “at-home” remedies that’ll keep the inflammation down? A
An e-collar (cone) would be the best way to prevent scratching or rubbing. The end off the cone should extend at least two inches beyond the tip of the nose. Ask your veterinarian for a dose for an over the counter antihistamine, such as Benadryl or Zyrtec. Either can be used In dogs to control itching and other symptoms of allergies.

His eyes are swollen ☹️☹️ how do you swell it down. I don't know the reason but I think he has allergies??
If Chopper does have allergies, antihistamines may provide some relief. He should first be examined by your veterinarian though, to rule out injury or infection. Your vet can recommend an OTC antihistamine or may dispense one for Chopper after the exam. For now, if he is pawing or rubbing his eyes, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. Dogs eyes are randomly swollen hes acting completely normal
Oh my, poor Lamar! I can certainly see the prominent swellings of both of his eyelids. One of the most common causes of eyelid swelling is from an allergic reaction. The tricky part with allergic reactions is that we often aren't able to figure out the trigger - whether he may be reacting to an insect or spider bite, pollens outside, or countless other things. However, since it looks as though Lamar is missing a good bit of hair around his eyelids (although this could also be pigment change and some glare in the picture), other possible causes could be infectious issues, like mange. Certainly other skin lesions or itching would make this scenario more likely. Since it's most concerning that he's possibly experiencing an allergic reaction with swelling on his face, you really should take him to an emergency vet right away for evaluation and treatment. Some allergic reactions can progress to anaphylaxis, which can cause severe breathing difficulties. I hope that he's feeling better soon!

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I can see a small amount of inflammation and hair loss around the eye. This is an indication of chronic itching. This can be caused by conjunctivitis, allergies, or irritation caused by an ulcer or foreign body. Your vet can rule out serious conditions such as a foreign body or ulcer, and prescribe any inflammatory eye drops or a special diet in case of allergies. In the meantime, you can get Lito an E-collar or “cone” to prevent him from scratching and causing further damage. I hope this helps and that all is well!
