My dog hit by door, has swelling. What emergency signs to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 35 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

My 7 lb. Yorkie Poo got the lower half of his torso slammed in by a closing door. I was walking into the garage and didn’t notice him behind me. He whined for about 20 seconds and went to his crate. He’s already managed to get up on the sofa and is laying next to me. The area that was caught has some swelling & he whines if I press on it. What warning signs should I look for? I really can’t afford a trip to the pet ER right now.

Hello there, It's difficult to advise without a physical exam, as a swelling could be anything from a bruise to a serious hernia. I would recommend keeping a close eye on him for ability to walk, urinate, and defecate. Inability to do these things could indicate spinal cord trauma. I would recommend a trip to his regular vet in the morning to have the swelling examined and perhaps some pain medications. I hope this helps.
