What's this painful, long growth on my dog's tail? Is it a worm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

I have found something on the end of my dogs tails. It is long and it hurts my dog when I touch it. I thought it was a worm at first but it does not seem to be a worm just resembles one.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like some form of skin growth. These skin tags are usually benign and may just fall off leaving small skin sore but Lucky will need to be fully examined by a vet to make the final diagnosis. Please, take your dog to your local vets tomorrow for an appointment. Your vet may want to remove it under local anaesthesia if it is painful for Lucky
