My dog is starving after dental anesthesia. Can he eat and drink?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My dog had dental anesthesia and a sedative today for a dental procedure. 12 pound yorkie. He was done by 1:30 pm. He has been walking around, alert, looking for food the last 3 hours. The vet assistant told me not to give him food or water until midnight tonight. Supposedly he had IV fluids. Can I give him some hard kibble dog food and water? He is starving. He hasn't eaten since 7 pm yesterday.

As long as he is behaving normally, you can offer 1/4 of his meal and a 1/4 cup of water. Soak the food first to soften it in case his teeth and mouth are still sensitive. He likely received IV fluids during the procedure, so dehydration should not be a concern. You can probably feed him normally tomorrow.
