My dog has atopic dermatitis. Can I use Benadryl instead of Apoquel?

My dog has been prescribed Apoquel for her atopic dermatitis, but I am wanting to use an over-the-counter medication as the Apoquel is very costly. Could I used Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride?

Hello. Unfortunately, very few dogs will respond in any way to Diphenhydramine. It really is not of much use for allergies in dogs. You might look at what some of the on-line pharmacies are charging for Apoquel & then request a prescription from your veterinarian. You might find it a little cheaper on Chewy, PetMeds, or one of a dozen pet pharmacies out there. Good luck & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
