Why does my outdoor cat have a scabby, smelly ear with hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed

Outdoor cat has a strange large scab in her ear. I also noticed a strong odor she’s never had before. She is missing cat hair behind her ear. I attached a photo of inside of ear. Her appetite is good always hungry. However I have two cats and one of them has been vomiting. Unsure if it’s due to diet change. Trying different brands of wet and raw freeze dried food. I think it may be her vomiting because there was vomit where she hangs out. She is very vocal but that is usually normal.

Hello. This is definitely a very irritated ear, but your veterinarian really needs to see what is going on in the ear canal to make an actual diagnosis. The vomiting should be unrelated to what is going on in the ear, but Cafe could have more than one issue at a time. With having an ear this possibly infected, & vomiting, you really need to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Without knowing exactly what is medically going on with the ear & why she is vomiting, there really is not much you can do for her at home. I do hope you can have her seen soon. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
