Why does my dog have recurring vaginal discharge and smelly urine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Female | spayed | 18 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

My dog is presenting a white secretion that when cleaned looks yellowish coming out of her vagina. She has had antibiotic treatment for a UTI twice, but I’m noT sure why the treatment keeps working for a couple of weeks and then the secretion comes back. There is also a smell to the urine, almost chemical. It is not that strong this time but I can start smelling it now. She does wear diapers but we keep her as clean as we can and she has a normal appetite and drinks water regularly. Thank you!

She could have a recurring vaginitis because of the damp environment of the diapers. I would get her seen by your vet to be sure and see what needs to be done about it. If she can go for periods of time without the diapers to let her rear dry and let air circulate that would be ideal but I understand that may not be feasible.
