Why does my cat cough after liquid prednisolone? Syringe vs dropper.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

The vet prescribed my cat prednisolone liquid 3ml 2x a day for one week then 1ml 1x daily for another week, she has been on it for 3 days and a half now and I noticed twice she coughed after I gave it to her? It has been challenging to give her the syringe. She did not vomit but did cough twice after after giving her the liquid med,is she coughing because I am pouring the liquid to fast in her mouth, is it me or is the pred making her sick, can I use dropper instead of a syringeto slow it down?

Cats can sometimes cough after being given a med, especially if giving it is stressful for them or if it's irritating their throat. If Sweetie is more comfortable taking the same amount via dropper, and it less stressful for her, you can administer the meds that way. It is likely the syringe was suggested so she doesn't have to taste the medication (it can be bitter) since the syringe will place it further back in the throat, and so it is faster to give.
