What's causing my cat's red, scaly, raised belly lesion with black?

My approximatly 10 year old neutered male has a lesion on his belly. I have a vet appointment for 3/1 but I'd like to have an idea of what I'm dealing with. It it red, scaly and raised. There is also a black section Thank you for any advice you can give me. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

He could be experiencing an allergy to something in his diet or environment. Infections are also common. For example, cats can develop ringworm. This is especially common when a new kitten is brought home. Fleas are frequently seen in cats, but obviously of an issue in the winter. Mites are also possible. The veterinarian will examine him and may test samples from his skin. This will help to reach a diagnosis and guide treatment.
