Can I avoid feeding my cat before a vet visit to stop litter box use?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Should I avoid feeding my cat the morning before a vet visit to avoid the need for the litter box and just feed her when we get back from the vet?

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!! You ask a very good question and I can tell you thought about this for a while. I think what you are suggesting is interesting and I think it's a great idea. Cats and dogs both will need to have a bowel movement after they eat. Dogs usually pretty quickly and cats sometime thereafter, but can be quickly when they are stressed in a carrier in your car going to the see the vet!! So great idea. That is if you can stand the constant crying in the car which could be the car ride and hunger. No seriously, great idea. I think it's completely safe to try. I hope I answered your question and I wish you and Sweetie the best of luck for her upcoming veterinary visits.
