My dog struggles to take pills; her mouth won't open wide. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 23 lbs

Need tips administering a pill to a distemper survivor. She can't open her mouth wide. I use a pill popper and it is a struggle. The pill comes out before it is "popped" and she spits it out. It takes 5 times to get it swallowed. Same struggle if I liquify it first. Can't hide it in food.

Unfortunately, if you cannot get medications in to her then you need to ask your vet if there is an injectable, transdermal or melt-away equivalent. Many drugs these days can be compounded into these formulations. Talk to your vet about this- RoadRunner and Wedgewood Pharmacies are the best at making alternative medication dosing systems.
