My dog won't eat after moving, but eats treats. Is she stressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 1 month old

My dog and I moved into a new place and she won't eat. It's been about a week. She'll eat treats and human food, but rarely eats her actual dog food. I've seen her touch it maybe twice and only for a bite or two. I don't normally give her human food, but I don't want her to starve. She seems perfectly fine, she's as energetic as always, nothing seems to be wrong. Should I be worried, or is this just something that should pass once she's more comfortable?

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Stormi. This may very well still be an adjustment peroid for her. You can try warming her food a bit, & even hand feeding her until she seems more secure in her surroundings. You should also be very careful in the number of treats & amount of human food you are giving her. Dogs very rarely will starve themselves unless there is a medical reason for the loss of appetite, but it is easy to satisfy a small dog with even a few extra treats each day. If concerned, you should have her examined by a veterinarian to make sure she is as healthy as possible. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
