My dog drank coffee. Is it toxic? Should I take him to the vet?

I just spilled my venti latte with an extra espresso shot onto the bed and Cassidy drank a significant amount of it before I was able to get it cleaned up. How much coffee is toxic to dogs? Should I take him to emergency?

Oh no, that's not good! Symptoms can occur with the consumption of 9 mg/pound of caffeine. I don't know how much Cassidy ingested, but you may see signs. I'd take him into the emergency vet now to be safe. Best of luck.

Coffee is toxic to dogs. If your dog only took a sip of the cup, then she should be ok. Our Shepard mix drank about a 12 oz cup of mocha cappuccino coffee drink. It has Dutched cocoa powder in it. Is this poisonous to the dog?
Oh dear! You're right that cocoa powder can certainly be toxic to dogs; coffee can as well, since they don't tolerate caffeine very well. But the good news is, I would not expect a single prepackaged coffee drink like this to contain enough of either one to cause any serious toxicity issues in a large-breed dog. It's possible that he may have some mild stomach upset if he isn't used to eating things like this, but otherwise I would not expect to see any serious problems. To be safe, it would be best to monitor him for the next 12 hours for any signs of toxicity - which would include repeated episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, restlessness or hyperactivity, muscle tremors, or even seizures. If you see anything that concerns you, you can always take him to the vet to be checked.

My 9 week old puppy just drank some of my coffee and he is restless. He is a mixed chihuahua and terrier so he is tiny and I’m scared that he can have a heart attack or something. What should I do?
Hi and thanks for posting. Caffeine can be toxic to dogs, especially in small puppies. Concerning signs include restlessness, panting, pacing, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, or tremors. Since he is experiencing clinical signs, I would recommend Max be taken to your nearest emergency veterinary clinic or 24 hour veterinary facility right away so he can be appropriately treated.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Sophie. I would recommend watching her closely tonight for signs of toxicity from the coffee. Hopefully she just ingested a small amount and will have no ill effects, but you want to watch for vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity/excitability, racing heart, tremors/muscle twitching, and seizures. If any of these occur, then take Sophie in to the vet (vomiting and diarrhea if just occurring a few times may not require emergency care, but repeated vomiting or the other symptoms listed would warrant an emergency trip visit).

My dog weighs 34 lbs. and she ingested 2 energy bars with 130mg caffeine total.
As I'm sure you are aware, caffeine is toxic to dogs. Symptoms can occur with the consumption of 9 mg/pound of caffeine. At Riley's weight, that would be 306mg of caffeine. She should be ok, but monitor her for the next 24 hours to be safe. Best of luck.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco 4oz of coffee contains approximately 68mg of caffeine which may be concern. Symptoms of caffeine toxicity can start to occur at 15mg of caffeine per kg of body weight. For a 10lb cat, this places Cleo right at the 15mg per kg dosage. At this point, I would monitor her at home very closely. If Cleo begins showing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, restlessness, increased urination, tremors, seizures, panting, or heavy breathing, please take Cleo to an emergency veterinary clinic right away. Dogs and cats appear to be more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than people. Depending on the amount ingested, signs of hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, and elevated body temperature may be seen. In severe cases, seizures, collapse and death are possible. I would recommend to have her immediately checked by your local veterinarian.
