My dog ate Brach's jelly hearts. Should I worry about xylitol?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 41 lbs

My dogs ate a quarter of a bag of Brach's cinnamon jelly hearts. They are both between 45-55lbs. Im not sure of what time but it was between 6-8hrs and they are acting just fine. Both pooped, im just scared of xylitol poisoning. I don't know if they contain that the ingredients just said sugar.

If the Brach's contained xylitol, it would say it on the label. Since the ingredients say sugar, it won't contain xylitol, so they won't get poisoning from this. I would be concerned they may have some stomach upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you see that, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, have them seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

As long as there is no xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). As long as Charlie is behaving normally, you should be fine. Minor stomach upset can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian may include: persistent or worsening stomach upset, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or lethargy.

Hey, my dog just ate a sugar free mint. I read online that most sugar free products contain xylitol and that xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. My dog is about 15 pounds. Should I be worried?
Hi there. Yes, if the mint contained xylitol, this is very concerning as it only takes a very small amount to be toxic - especially in a small dog. I would recommend looking up the brand name of the mint online to check the ingredient list. If xylitol is listed as an ingredient, you need to take her to the vet immediately for treatment.

Check the ingredients. Xylitol is found in some sugar free gums and it is highly toxic to dogs. If Xylitol is present, have her examined quickly to start treatment asap. If Xylitol is not present, the gum should not cause a problem. I hope this helps.

How can I tell if my dog has xylitol poisoning?
Xylitol causes hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. If Arlo May have ingested xylitol in the past 48 hours I’d recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline.com). If it’s been more than 48 hours I’d recommend seeing your vet to have them check liver values.

My dog ate 3 stale gummy bears. Will he be alright?
Most types of gummy bears should not cause any problems; however, you should check the ingredients to make sure that they don't contain [xylitol](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-products-that-contain-xylitol/). If they don't, then Bogo should be just fine apart from some mild GI upset such as loose stool for a day or so. If they do contain xylitol, this is a more serious problem because this sweetener is toxic to dogs - so if this is on the ingredient list, I would recommend having him seen by an emergency vet right away so that they can induce vomiting and start treatment to try and prevent any problems.

Reggie should be ok. I've looked over the ingredients list myself, and I also cannot find xylitol on the ingredients list. More than likely, you will see some stomach upset in Reggie, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you do see that, withhold food and feed a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. I can understand being worried. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. The xylitol itself would be in the chocolate and if the wrapper was empty, then she wouldn’t have ingested any xylitol. She will likely be fine. If she was to get sick, you’d see signs of toxicity within 15-30 minutes of ingestion.

This is not enough chocolate to cause toxicity unless your pets have an abnormal sensitivity. Check the ingredients to make sure there is no xylitol as this is toxic to dogs. If xylitol is present, they need to go to the veterinarian right away for further decontamination. While you may not see any adverse effects, eating candy can result in vomiting or diarrhea.
