My dog was attacked. Does her neck wound need stitches or vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 38 lbs

My dog was attacked tonight and has a dime-sized hole in her neck. It’s not bleeding much and appears superficial but wondering if it needs stitches, or if cleaning and polysporin will heal it?

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. That appears to be full thickness through the skin, and would likely benefit from sutures. Additionally, bite wounds have a very high likelihood of becoming infected without systemic (oral) antibiotics, so Hazel should be seen by the vet to get started on antibiotics. Hope this helps.
