My Pomeranian has dark bruising after spay surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 7 lbs

Hello, my 1year old Pomeranian was just spayed 72 hours ago. I have googled images and know that bruising after surgery is normal, but she’s just so small and it seems so dark and this is my first experience with a dog and this procedure. Probably just being a helicopter parent but reassurance would help! She’s eating, drinking, peeing/pooping normally and does not seem to be in any pain other than what I suspect is normal.

Hi and thanks for your request. The black discoloration is only due to the hemoglobin ( a protein present in the blood) maturation/degradation, this is normal and should not be a cause of concern if Seti is otherwise fine in herself. The surgical wound looks normal. Keep in touch for any other concern but all looks good to me!
