My dog has mites, Frontline isn't working. Why is he still itchy?

Hi. We have an 8-month-old male great Pyrenees. When we adopted him from the shelter, we noticed he was scratching a lot. Found little black things and thought they were fleas. Took him to the vet to see what they recommend. The vet put one under the microscope and said they were mites. He told us to use Frontline for 3 months and so far there has been no change. He is still scratching continuously. Is there anything else you can recommend?

You could talk to your vet about switching from frontline to Nexgard. Also, if he has any skin lesions, he may need additional medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications to control the itching. It would be best to call your vet and schedule a recheck examination.
