My dog ran out of Carprofen. Can I give her OTC pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 11 years old | 57 lbs

My dog is on long-term pain medication: Carprofen 50mg twice daily. I ran out of pills this morning (Sunday) and my vet is closed until tomorrow morning. Is there something non-prescription I can give her tonight?

Hi there. No, unfortunately there are no over-the-counter pain medications that are safe for use in dogs, so I would not give anything this evening. If you're out of her medication, your best option would be to just skip tonight's dose and make sure to get a refill tomorrow morning at your vet's office so that you can restart it tomorrow. Missing a single dose shouldn't make too much difference, especially if she's on it twice daily. :)
