Why is my kitten vomiting after new meds or eating adult cat food?

My kitten, Bean (5-6mo.), has thrown up 2 times today, several hours apart. I’m worried the medicines that his vet put him on are hurting his stomach. He vomited and it was liquidy and there were chunks of food in it. He is on: 0.6mL of Azrithromycin, 0.08 mL Buprenorphine every 12 hours orally, & Erythromycin Opthalmic Ointment 2x daily. He also has eaten some of my adult cat’s food.

Poor Bean. It could be the azithromycin upsetting his stomach, as that could be a side effect of the antibiotic. I'd recommend giving the medication with food to see if that helps. Also eating the adult cat food can cause the vomiting. Sudden changes in diet can lead to it. Give his vet a call in the morning to let them know you are seeing some vomiting, as they may want to see him. Best of luck.

Antibiotics can cause GI upset in cats, so it could be that Korben Dallas was eating less while he was on the antibiotics. Now that he's off the antibiotics, he's feeling better and eating much more quickly. That would be why he's throwing up all of his food. I would try to feed him smaller amounts more frequently to have him slow down his eating. If that doesn't help with the vomiting, I would take him into the vet for an exam, as he could have a medical illness causing the vomiting.

Unfortunately, some antibiotics can cause GI upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). Since Snow is a kitten, we certainly worry more about her vomiting and getting dehydrated. Since it's too late to contact your vet tonight, I would try to offer Snow a small amount of water overnight and see if she is able to keep that down. If she does not want to drink water, you can try a small amount of a low sodium chicken broth or the water (not oil) that canned tuna or salmon is packed in. I would recommend contacting your vet in the morning to get their recommendation from there. If Snow continues to vomit, she will certainly need to be seen by your vet for some medication. Good luck! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could certainly be a side effect of the antibiotics though it could also be due to disease per se. For that reason, I recommend you check in with the veterinarian who prescribed the medication as they have more knowledge on the specifics on the case. Jasper has vomited sunday, monday, and tuesday now. We went to the vet on Tues morning and they gave me more deworming treatment and a high calorie food. They also suggested probiotics. We came home Tues he ate some of the new food with the probiotic
It's possible there could be an underlying illness or functional issue causing it, especially if it is coming back up undigested. X-ray can help look for obstruction, while blood work may help find underlying illnesses or disease. If that doesn't find the issue, speaking with a specialist to look for functional problems such as the esophagus not working properly may help. If you just immediately switched to the new food without transitioning from the old, that can also sometimes cause digestive upset and vomiting, so it is best to transition the food slowly over a period of 7-9 days to avoid this. You can try a bland meal of some boiled chicken to see if it stays down, however continuing to work with your vet as you have is the best option.

I would recommend taking Soot back to the vet. If he hasn't been on antibiotics in 2 days then there may be another reason for the vomiting. He needs a full exam and possible diagnostics to determine the cause of vomitting and approriate treatment. Syringe feeding him while he is sick and nauseated is unlikely to be successful. Poor kitty. It sounds like Kovu has a pretty sensitive stomach. It is best to either keep him on the same food and not make any changes in the brand, or look into a prescription diet food designed for pets with food sensitivity, such as Royal Canin Gastrointestinal, Hills Z/D ultra, or Royal Canin Hydrolyzed protein. There aren’t a lot of options for kittens however, except for the Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein high energy. Since things are going well now, I wouldn’t make any changes to his diet. Continue to monitor him for continued vomiting and if seen it’s best to get him to your vet for anti-nausea medication and a probiotic to calm things down until his body regulates again. The vet will also check him over to ensure there is nothing else underlying going on here such as intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. I hope that your fur baby Kovu has some resolve to his stomach issues soon! Best wishes and take care.

Since you recently changed Ichiro's food, that could be the cause of his vomiting and diarrhea. Be sure to get him back on a kitten formulated food as soon as possible, as he needs that in order to grow properly. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps him. I recommend withholding food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. It's very likely to be the switch up of food. withhold food for 8 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his old food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

The vomiting could be caused by stress, diet change, infection, parasite, etc. You could take a fecal sample to a vet for testing to make sure he doesn't have a parasite. You could also feed him a bland gastrointestinal or sensitive stomach diet and see if that helps. Otherwise, he needs to be examined and treated by a vet. He may need an anti-nausea medications and a gastrointestinal protectant to help. Hope he feels better soon!
