My dog's spay stitches ripped open. Should I see a vet for infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 58 lbs

Our dog was spayed on 1/6/21. Tonight some of her stitches ripped open when she had to be picked up due to another dog aggressively coming towards her. Do we need to see her vet to do more stitches? Do we just keep an eye on the incision for infection?

That looks like it's healing pretty well at this stage. Keep an eye on it for any redness, bleeding, seeping, swelling or her feeling sick or lethargic. Keep her confined, going outside only on a leash and only long enough to go potty for another week or so until she heals completely.

There is a mild inflammation and swelling, but no clear signs of infections are present at this stage (at least from what I can see from the pic). I think he can possibly wait until saturday, unless more swelling and redness and discharge is seen in the wound area.
