My 12-week-old puppy has bloody, mucousy stool. What should I do?

Hi, we have a 12 weeks old cocker spaniel and he been pooing clear mucus with blood after his stool. Our vet gave us sentinel and pyrantel but it looks like it’s not helping, he is still the same after 5 days, any advice . Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian again. Ideally, he should see an emergency veterinarian this weekend. The medications given treat certain intestinal parasites, but not all of them. He will need to have fecal testing performed to determine if there is a different parasite such as coccidia or giardia that is not covered by his current medications. He could also have a bacterial imbalance or even a viral infection such as parvo. I also worry that he is dehydrated from the ongoing fluid losses in the diarrhea. The veterinarian will examine him and guide you as far as testing and treatment options. His diet may be discussed as well. I hope this information helps!
