My cat's eye is swollen and squinting. Is it an injury or allergy?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

My kitty’s eye is swollen and she keeps squinting it. We have a 4 month old kitten who likes to play with her and he tends to be too rough, so we try keeping a close eye on them and pull him away when he’s being too harsh. I’m not sure if he scratched her, but we also had a mildew problem today, so I’m wondering if she’s potentially having an allergic reaction to that. Any advice would be so appreciated! I adore her and can’t imagine anything happening to my baby! Thank you!

I see what you mean about Shai Shai's eye and I'm concerned she could have an injury to her eye from the kitten. It could be scratched. Any eye problem is a medical emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. You need to get her into a vet first thing in the morning to get this diagnosed and treated. His eye does look swollen! He could have injured his eye or he could have an eye infection. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Food allergies are actually pretty rare in cats, so I'm wondering if this is from playing rough with Ciri's brother. I am concerned that he has a swollen eyelid, and from the picture, it does look quite swollen. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. You are correct that scratch could have caused her eye to swell (localized trauma), and it would be a good idea to have her taken into the vet as soon as possible. This will be painful to her, and she will likely need pain meds as well as treatment for the swelling. Please do not give her any human pain meds, as many are toxic to cats and can be fatal if given.

Poor Shay! Her eye could be watering due to injury, infection, or allergies. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. Poor little kitten! I would have this kitten seen by a vet immediately. The kitten should have suffered an injury to her eye causing the swelling. My cat accidentally escaped yesterday. She returned with what looks like a scratch near her lower eye lid. May a scratch on her eye. It is slightly swollen and tearing a bit. Advise?
The best thing to do is take her to a vet since it is so close to her eye. If the scratch affected the eye itself it can result in vision damage if it goes untreated. IF the swelling is just from the skin, then it can form an abscess and cause an infection to make her stop eating. You can try to gently wipe the area with a damp cloth to keep it clean. You can rinse the eye with saline eye drops to help with the discharge. You can apply a warm compress to help with swelling also until you can get her seen

Poor girl. Yes I do see the swelling there of the left eye. She may or may not have scratched her eye b/c of the fleas, but it definitely isn't helping the situation. You will unfortunately have to visit your vet to get the prescribed medication she needs to have her eye treated for, because there are no over the counter eye meds for pets. I would recommend topical Revolution to prevent fleas in cats, this product is also given through your vet and is highly effective. I would also recommend treating your home for fleas with a flea fogger from your local Lowe's or Home depot. So its best to schedule an appt within the next day or 2 to get Qumar the medications she needs to get well. I hope that Qumar is able to get all her issues resolved soon. Best wishes and take care.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions.
