Cat bald spot above eye & hacking: Is it stress, allergy, or ringworm?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I found a bald spot above my cat’s eye this morning. Also, I heard him try to hack something up but looked and didn’t find anything. I’m wondering if it might be an allergic reaction to a new silicone brush I used on him 2 days ago or if it could be stress related. I closed the door to his favorite room yesterday because I had to clean. And what you think I should do, if anything?

If he's acting okay otherwise, keep an eye on it, as long as he hasn't been exposed to any other animals that may have passed along something like ringworm recently. If so, get him checked as soon as possible since ringworm can be passed on to people and other animals. If he's very sensitive, it could be stress, especially if he's shown symptoms of stress related overgrooming in the past. Silicone isn't something I've had experience with a cat having a sensitivity to, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. If he has had reactions to plastic bowls then it's definitely possible. If it gets worse or spreads, get him in to see your vet as soon as possible.
