My Shar Pei has kidney failure. Are there options besides euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chinese Shar-Pei | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 46 lbs

My 8 year old shar pei is suffering from kidney failure. The vet recommended euthanasia as the only option. I realize the results from the blood test are extremely bad. Is there another solution apart from euthanasia. She lost her appetite and is losing weight, but she started to eat again without vomiting. She sleeps a lot but doesn’t look like she is in pain or suffering. Since she still looks like a happy dog I would feel guilty for putting her to sleep without trying anything first.

You can certainly try hospitalization with antibiotics and intravenous fluids. Recheck her kidney values daily to assess for improvement. Otherwise, another option would be dialysis if that is accessible to you.
