Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old | 79 lbs
My 79 pound 11 year old lab was prescribed Sulfa/trimethoprim on Friday, 12/4/20, due to his left front leg swelling. 960 mg every 12 hrs. There is no sign of what caused his leg to swell. X-rays showed inflammation around the bone, but other than that, no signs of why. There is no change in the leg today, Sunday. The swelling has not gone to any other part of his body. Would the medication need more time to work? The swelling on his entire leg began overnight 12/3.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dudley. It can take a while for antibiotics to make a difference. I would continue with the medication as prescribed. If you have seen absolutely no improvement by tomorrow, then he should see his veterinarian again. There can be other causes for a swollen leg aside from infection. Vasculitis, for example, is possible. However, it is always important to start antibiotics first as other medications could make an infection worse if not treated. These can be challenging cases! I hope this information helps!
