My dog has diarrhea from wet food. Should I try a different brand?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Flat-Coated Retriever | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

My dog has gotten very bored of his dry kibble to the point where he would wait until he’s starving to eat anything. So I tried cutting his kibble in half and then adding in half a serving of wet dog food. and he LOVES it! the only problem is that he has had soft and smaller stools, with some diarrhea, and it has now been 3 weeks. I don’t want to stop giving him wet dog food because he really loves it, but I need a new solution. should I try different flavors or a different brand?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ranger. If the diarrhea started after adding the canned food to his diet, then this is likely the cause. If the diarrhea has been intermittent or present prior to the diet change, then I worry that there is a different cause. In this case, he should see his veterinarian for fecal testing. Otherwise, you can try to add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. This can help with stool quality. A different brand of canned food or a smaller amount may help as well. Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach is a good formula for mild GI upset. I hope this information helps!
