Is it safe to give dog pain meds with kidney disease & pancreatitis?

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 11 months old | 19 lbs

My 15 year old cockerpoo who is 20 pounds. He is having bad tooth pain. He has kidney disease and was diagnosed with pancreatitis a few weeks ago. The pancreatitis seems to be doing better with a change in diet. My question is it safe to give him 1, 50mg Tramadol that was prescribed for my other dog or quarter of a low dose aspirin for his pain until I can get a hold of his vet tomorrow?

No this is not safe to do at all. The medication isn't prescribed for Buddy and it may not be the correct dose. Plus aspirin is never safe to give dogs, it causes GI bleeding and ulcers. I would get him into his vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

No, I would not give Tank any more. Aspirin isn't really safe for dogs, it causes GI ulcers and bleeding. Rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. Take him into the vet first thing in the morning to get this treated, and the vet can give him safe pain medication. I would not give Scruffy aspirin. Even though it says it's for dogs, it still can cause GI ulcers and bleeding, and it's not safe to give to him. As for the Tramadol, I can't wait whether or not it's safe to give him nor can I tell you for how long. That's illegal for me to do so because I can't see him in person. Do not give him Tramadol without having it prescribed to him by the vet. Only the vet can decided if that's safe for him to take. I would have him seen by a vet to discuss safe pain relief for him.

My dog is trying out out tramadol for pain for his pancreatitis. They gave us 50 mg pills that are to be cut in half. Given twice daily. But since he is a 10 pound dog, isn't 25 mg twice a day a bit high of a dosage?
No, this dose is within the normal range for tramadol from dogs. You can give as little as 0.5 mg/lb to 4.5 mg/lb every 8-12 hours safely. The amount he is being given is likely due to the amount of pain Binx is in, as higher doses are given when the dog is in great pain. I hope this helps and he feels better soon!

My dog has been diagnosed with GI disease, and has ascites. He has just been put on metronidazole 250mg and spironolactone 25mg . What can I give him for the pain? Someone said buffered aspirin, like Bayer. Is this true?
I am so sorry you and Prince are going through this. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Prince without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, but aspirin may be dangerous for Prince, especially in his current condition.

Do NOT give Bob baby aspirin! Aspirin causes internal bleeding and GI ulcers in dogs, and is not safe to give to him. The best thing to do is rest Bob for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any more human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Can I give my dog pain killers like aspirin for his arthritis
Aspirin can be used in dogs but it can have some serious side effects, like vomiting, diarrhea, and gastric ulcers. There are pain relievers that are specifically made for dogs that would be a better choice. Talk to your vet about trying him on a medication, like Previcox, Deramaxx, or Rimadyl. You could also try a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Do not give Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Aleve as they are toxic to dogs.

Please do not give him aspirin! It is not recommended to give it to dogs, as it causes internal bleeding and GI ulcers, and you should stop giving it to him now to prevent this from happening. I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

Any recommended over the counter pain medication or aspirins for dogs? At a store such as pet co pet smart or Walmart. Etc?
Unfortunately there are no safe OTC pain medications for dogs. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. In addition, aspirin should never be given to dogs, it causes GI ulcers and bleeding. The only safe pain medications for dogs are prescription from the vet. If Bear is in pain, you will need to take him into the vet to get pain meds. Best of luck.
