My 6-month-old mini dachshund has high liver enzymes. Is spaying safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 6.8 lbs

These are the results from my 6 month old 6.7 pound mini dachshund. Her ultrasound came back healthy with no need for a biopsy. Apparently dogs with high liver enzymes are high risk for bleeding heavily during surgery. She is scheduled to be spayed in a few days... do you have an opinion if we should do the procedure or not? Your opinion would be very valuable to me. Sincerely, Katherine

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Penelope. It is good that her ultrasound came back normal. I typically recommend blood work such as a bile acids panel (liver function test) and even a coagulation panel prior to surgery in the case of elevated liver values. These blood panels will help to ensure that it is safe for her to go under anesthesia. I hope this information helps!
