Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 49 lbs

My dog has been suffering from allergies since she was a puppy. Her eyes have been irritating her for the last 6 months and doesn’t seem to get better. How can we help treat, prevent and manage the irritation for her? Thanks

Hi and thanks for your request. I would first of all try to understand the underlying cause of the allergy, Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). In the meantime some eye drops based on anti-inflammatory (steroids) can be relieve effectively the itch, but corneal ulcerations and any eye damage need to be ruled out before applying those.
